Al Jaffee’s Fold-Ins and shrinking cities

Al Jaffee’s Fold-Ins and shrinking cities

I’m working on a project for a large-scale new transport connection that’s going to have the effect of shrinking a major city. They’re looking for ways to communicate this idea.

I first thought about the way Harry Beck’s tube map graphically illustrated this at the beginning of the 20th century – telescoping the suburbs in to the enlarged centre, but then I thought about Jaffee’s fold-ins.

These were one of my favourite features of my older brother’s Mad magazines when I was a kid. I always tried to see the folded picture while the page was still open, but guessing the text was a bit of a stretch.
